Kazakhstan's Amir Zakirov and China's Liu Qingyi triumphed at the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) Breaking for Gold World Series event in Kokura, the first ranking event to determine progress to next year's Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifier Series.

B-boy Amir overcame The Netherlands' Menno Van Gorp in the quarter-finals, then beat Japan's home favourite Shigeyuki Nakarai 5-4 in a deciding set in the semi-finals at the Kitakyushu Convention and Visitors Association.

He faced Jeffrey Mike Louis of the United States in the final, and dominated the first two sets 8-1 and 7-2 to clinch victory.

Olympic hopefuls Philip Kim of Canada, Karam Singh of Britain and Igor Wypiór of Poland all failed to reach the knockout stage.

Nakarai beat Ukraine's Oleg Kuznietsov to take bronze.

Liu claimed victory in the B-girl final by coming from behind to edge past Japan's world champion Ami Yuasa in the final set.

Italy's Antilai Sandrini beat the US' Grace Choi in the battle for bronze.

The B-boy competition in Kokura featured 99 competitors, with 81 taking part in the B-girl.

The Breaking for Gold World Series event was declared a success by chair and head of the WDSF Breaking Division Bojin Chen of Chinese Taipei.

"This was one of the best WDSF breaking events so far, and we will continue putting in this effort for all breakers, to bring it back to the community," he said.

Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is due to stage the next World Series event on April 14 and 15.

Points accrued in the Breaking for Gold World Series help to determine the breaking athletes set to compete at the Olympic Qualifier Series from March to June next year, where seven Paris 2024 berths are on offer.

B-boy and B-girl world champions for 2023 are set to automatically qualify for Paris 2024, with five athletes per gender qualifying through continental qualifiers.

Breaking is set to feature at the Olympic Games for the first time in the French capital as an additional sport, with competition due to be held at the Place de la Concorde.
