Althaus now has five gold medals at the World Championships, with this being her first individual victory as she achieved a distance of 97 metres and a total score of 249.1 points.

The German finished second in the qualifiers behind Norway's Anna Odine Strøm, who only managed third after accumulating 246 points with a distance of 95m.

In second place was Eva Pinkelnig, who climbed out of fifth place with a distance of 100m, reaching 246.9 points and overtaking Japan's Yuki Ito and Canada's Alexandria Loutitt.

Ito fell to sixth place with 229.3 points, while Loutitt fell completely out of the top 10.

Jonna Sundling, the reigning Olympic and world champion, retained her title after winning the sprint classic event.

"Oh, I’m so satisfied and happy," said Sundling.

"It was a really tough final but I’m so glad that I can keep up the speed all the way to the finish line. 

"My performances were up and down during the day but I felt better and better."

Sweden managed to claim the top four spots, with Emma Ribom winning silver and Maja Dahlqvist getting bronze.

Klæbo claimed his third World Championships title in the men's sprint classic, with fellow Norwegian Paal Golberg claiming second place and France's Jules Chappaz finishing third.

"I think it was a lot of fun racing here," said Klæbo.

"The track is a lot of fun, a lot of turns and quite difficult and it’s the first time in a long time we’ve seen so many people falling on sprint day."

The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will continue tomorrow, with the men's individual normal hill ski jumping qualifiers, the women's Nordic combined normal hill finals, and the men's skiathlon finals taking place.
