Australia's Arisa Trew secured pole position in the women's open qualifiers at the World Park Skateboarding Championships in Sharjah.

She topped the preliminary standings in the Emirati city with her second run as she posted a score of 79.83.

Despite only being second on the start list, she wowed the crowds with a fantastic McTwist en route to the leading total.

Behind her in second place was the United States' Minna Stress.

The 16-year-old Californian was one of eight Americans to advance to the next round, including Tokyo 2020 Olympian Bryce Wettstein and Jordyn Barratt.

Stress finished just short of Trew with 78.85 points to her name while Spaniard Naia Laso made up the top three on a total of 77.66.

Five Brazilians also made it through to Friday's quarter-finals with Tokyo 2020 Olympians Yndiara Asp and Dora Varella finishing in sixth and 19th respectively.

In all, 61 park skaters took in the heats at the Aljada Skatepark bowl to try and book their place in the next round but only 28 could progress.

Still to enter the competition are the skateboarders that were pre-seeded based on their Olympic World Skate Ranking.

The group, made up of Japan's Yosozumi Sakura, Sky Brown of Britain, Australian Poppy Olsen and Hiraki Kokona also of Japan, will join the action on Friday (February 10).

In addition to the world title, ranking points for Paris 2024 Olympic qualification are also on the line for skateboarders competing in Sharjah.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with the men's open qualifier before Friday's quarter-finals for both men and women.

The semi-finals and finals will then take place on February 11 and 12, respectively.
