Britain's Ed Wright has won the Finn Gold Cup in Miami for the first time in 12 years despite a lack of wind preventing competition on the final day.

The weather led to racing being cancelled on the final day in Florida and meant that Wright topped the table on 11 points, with his win marking the longest gap in Finn Gold Cup history.

Across eight races, the 45-year-old picked up four wins, two second-place finishes and one third to set a remarkable total.

He finished 12th in the seventh outing but had spared his discard for it which kept his total down.

Wright will add the title to his gold medal from the 2010 World Championships in San Francisco.

"Many times I've been second or third, so probably I've been knocking on the door a bunch of times - it's a nice feeling to win it again," said Wright.

"It was a stressful day with very light winds, but we didn't race today in the end so by default I got the win.

"It's been a fun week and it's nice to be back after a few years off the boat, I think it was 2019 the last time I was in the Finn, so it was really nice racing, and I really had a nice week."

He was joined on the podium by Hungarian silver medallist Domonkos Nemeth who amassed 22 points.

The highlight of his competition came in race five when he surged to victory in prime conditions.

Spain's Miguel Fernández Vasco rounded out the top three with 26 points.

He would have fared better if he was not forced to retire in the penultimate race, forcing him to use the discard on a 59th-place result.

Regardless, he was delighted with bronze.

"I am really happy because in three months I have won the Finn Europeans and now I finished the Finn Gold Cup in third, so it's a dream for me," said Fernández Vasco.

Athletes will now begin preparations for the Finn Class European Championship in Lake Balaton in Hungary, scheduled to take place from May 11 to 18.
