The 2023 Karate 1-Premier League season is set to begin in Cairo tomorrow, with new grand winners set to be crowned.

The overall winners were not crowned last year as the World Karate Federation (WKF) was not able to conduct the planned number of Karate 1-Premier League events.

Initially scheduled to be held in Moscow, one leg of the event was moved to Los Angeles due to the war in Ukraine and later cancelled due to logistical issues.

The results in Cairo will also be counted to determine the 2023 grand winners.

Scheduled to be held until January 29, the event will see over 400 athletes from 61 countries take part.

Spaniard Damian Quintero, Serap Ozcelik Arapoglu of Turkey, Ukrainian Anzhelika Terliuga and Feryal Abdelaziz of Egypt are some of the top names that have registered for the event.

Hosts Egypt has the largest team with 68 athletes.

The African nation last hosted a Karate 1-Premier League event in 2021.

They topped the medals table that year with five golds as Brazil, Spain and Ukraine also impressed.

The Karate 1-Premier League is the WKF's premier circuit, second only to the World Championships.
