The Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville has been awarded hosting rights for the United States' diving trials for the the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, it has been announced.

It is due to be the first time the facility at the University of Tennessee has held the trials, scheduled for June 2024.

Knoxville has previously staged the US National Championships in 2014 and Junior National Championships in 2019 in diving.

Trials for Paris 2024 are set to mark a shift away from Indianapolis, after the Indiana University Natatorium held the event for Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

West Virginia University’s Aquatic Center in Morgantown was another venue in contention to hold the trials, but missed out to Knoxville.

"We’re very excited to bring the trials to Knoxville," USA Diving President Lee Michaud said.

"The city has a rich history of hosting major events, and we’re thrilled to continue that in 2024.

"We were very impressed with the vision and enthusiasm they brought forth in their bid.

"We look forward to a great partnership with Visit Knoxville and the University of Tennessee as we work to make the 2024 trials an incredible experience for the divers, coaches and fans."

The Allan Jones Aquatic Center, built in 2008, is named after American millionaire businessman Allan Jones, the founder, chairman, and chief executive of Check Into Cash.

Jones, called the "father of the payday loan industry" for founding and building the first major payday loan chain, is one of the biggest supporters of grassroots sport in the US.

Visit Knoxville President Kim Bumpas added: "Hosting the US Olympic trials for diving is a major achievement.

"This continues to amplify Knoxville as a premier sports town, showcasing our venues and partnerships needed to bring top-tier events to our destination."

More than 100 divers are expected to participate at the trials in Knoxville, with competition taking place in the men's and women's individual and synchronised 3 metres springboard and 10m platform.

America won two Olympic silver medals and one bronze at Tokyo 2020, where China won all but one of the available eight golds.

Diving events at Paris 2024 are due to be held at the Olympic Aquatics Centre from July 27 to August 10.
