As for the Lake Placid 2023 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Winter World University Games, sustainability is the main focus of the organisation's World Conference here.

The Conference is set to take place from Friday until Sunday (January 13 to 15) at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts here.

It is due to run parallel to the Games under the theme "the intersection of climate change and winter sports."

"With the eyes of the world once again on Lake Placid, the intention is to focus attention on the urgency of climate change as it relates to winter sports," said the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education.

"Future leaders, changemakers, problem solvers, winter enthusiasts and citizens of the planet are invited to join the Save Winter Lake Placid 2023 FISU World Conference for three days of networking and idea sharing,

"Join scientists, students, athletes, academics, activists and practitioners to learn about current conditions, forecasts, innovations, adaptations, research and meaningful opportunities for activism at the intersection of climate change and winter sports."

A total of three subthemes are scheduled to take place, with "the snow and ice we ski and skate on; both natural and artificial" to begin proceedings.

That will be followed up by carbon footprint while training, competing and recreating and the role of inclusion and activism in winter sports and climate change.

Olympic figure skating champion Nathan Chen of the United States, activist Bill McKibben, climber Graham Zimmerman, and Alpinist Kitty Calhoun are all set to be headline speakers.

McKibben is the co-founder and senior advisor at 350.org, which is the first planet-wide, grassroots climate change movement.

Zimmerman and Calhoun are also both activists and have worked on the Protect our Winters film together.

The environmentally-friendly focus of the Conference is in line with the Save Winter initiative which hopes to provide climate action education, minimise waste to landfill, and reduce carbon footprints.
