The UIPM said the new format of fencing, obstacle, swimming and laser run would feature in three age-group World Championships this year.

These are the under-17 World Championships in Alexandria from July 12 to 16, the under-19 World Championships in Istanbul from July 26 to 30 and the Junior World Championships in Druskininkai, Lithuania from September 12 to 17.

The UIPM was strongly criticised by many leading athletes, including both of Britain’s Tokyo 2020 champions Joe Choong and Kate French, for a lack of consultation before it announced riding would be dropped from modern pentathlon after Paris 2024 - an action said to have been required for continued Olympic participation.

The controversial decision to establish obstacle as the replacement discipline for riding after Paris 2024 was taken at the UIPM Congress on November 12 last year by 69 votes to 11, after delegates had been told by a succession of speakers including UIPM President Klaus Schormann that "there is only one answer."

Last month the UIPM distributed the first obstacle discipline competition guidelines, which will be used to regulate the new discipline until the first competition rules are presented to the UIPM's 2024 Congress.

The latest publication is called obstacle discipline training tips, complemented by a three-part video.

In a statement the UIPM said more material is due to come out related to obstacle racing before the start of the 2023 competition season.

"Further resources are in the pipeline, including the UIPM obstacle catalogue, which will provide visual and technical details of the eight obstacles that will form each of the 60m-70m courses built for the various World Championships that feature the new discipline.

"This will be followed by an obstacle module for judges under the UIPM Judges Certification Programme and guidelines for competition organisers - all scheduled to be launched before the start of the UIPM 2023 competition season."

UIPM Athletes Committee chair Yasser Hefny said: "As our sport is now in a transitional phase that provides challenges as well as opportunities, I believe it’s essential to help guide nations in building a foundation for the new discipline and coordinating the training between all five disciplines."

UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann added: "Two months ago we had a historic UIPM Congress where our global community voted for change.

"Now the hard work is continuing as we start to implement this exciting evolution, and I am delighted to see resources from UIPM that will support the community as obstacle becomes integrated into modern pentathlon.

"This reform is central to our mission to not only survive in the Olympic Games, but to transform modern pentathlon into one of the most dynamic, accessible and popular sports in the Olympic movement.
