Brazilian high jumper Fernando Ferreira will be free to compete in next year's Pan American Games after receiving a three-month ban for using cannabis.

Ferreira submitted an in-competition sample at a meet in Leverkusen on August 28 which was later found to contain carboxy-THC, a metabolite of cannabis banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The 27-year-old admitted to the Athletics Integrity Unity that he had ingested cannabis roughly two days before the event, for recreational reasons.

Ferreira admitted an anti-doping rule violation and accepted a three-month ban, which began on November 16.

It means the reigning South American champion will be cleared to return to action well in advance of next year's Pan American Games in Santiago, plus the South American Championships on home soil in São Paulo and Budapest's staging of the World Championships.

Ferreira, who has a personal best of 2.30 metres, came fourth at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

Cannabis' place on the WADA List of Prohibited Substances and Methods, under substances of abuse, is a contentious issue and as more countries legalise and decriminalise marijuana there have been calls for it to be removed.

These grew after a cannabis positive ruled American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson out of last year's delayed Olympic Games.

However, the WADA Executive Committee in September approved it remaining in place, following a List Expert Advisory Group recommendation.
