Former New South Wales Premier Mike Baird is to become the new Cricket Australia chair next year after Lachlan Henderson announced his resignation.

Henderson has blamed work commitments for the departure, having recently been appointed chief executive of HBF, a Perth-based provider of health insurance.

Henderson, who only became chair last February, will remain on the Board of Directors and formerly step down in February 2023.

Baird is already on the Board, having joined in 2020.

From April 2014 to January 2017, Liberal Party politician Baird was New South Wales Premier.

Baird left politics when he stepped down as Premier and has since worked at a bank and a care provider.

Negotiating a new deal for media rights and a pay agreement with players' union the Australian Cricket Association are expected to be among Baird's most pressing early tasks as chair.

Including the interim Richard Freudenstein, Baird will be Cricket Australia's third chair since Earl Eddings quit in October 2021.

"Lachlan has made a great contribution as chair and I’m delighted he will continue to provide his considerable business and cricket expertise on the CA Board," Baird said.

"It is an honour to take such an important role in Australian cricket at a time when so much exciting work is being done to grow our national sport and take it forward.

"I'm pleased to have the chance to work even more closely with CEO Nick Hockley and his team and all those working across Australian cricket."

Henderson's short tenure as chair has featured Australia hosting the Men's T20 World Cup, which was first scheduled in 2020 but moved to this year as part of a COVID-19-related reshuffle.

Australia's women's team have also been very successful, winning the 50-over World Cup in New Zealand and a Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medal in the T20 format.

Cricket Australia launched a five-year strategic plan to boost the sport's growth in August.

Having cricket feature at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics is among 10 "strategic priorities" laid out in the plan.
