The world silver medallists took the pairs title after scoring 136.50 points in the free skate completing a triple twist, throw triple Lutz and loop, and level four lifts during their routine.

This gave them a final score of 214.58 and saw them edge out world champions Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier of the United States who scored 135.63 points in their routine.

Knierim and Frazier completed a triple twist, throw triple Lutz and loop but errors on the solo jumps from Frazier proved crucial as they finished on 213.28 points, and had to settle for silver.

Italians Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii gave their country a first pairs medal at the event as they completed the podium with 187.02 points.

Their routine featured a level-four triple twist and a throw triple Salchow however despite Macii falling they scored a personal best of 119.72 points, enough to move up a place in the overall standings.

Elsewhere the ice dance competition got underway today with the rhythm dance, with Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier of Canada topping the standings with 85.93 points.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States sit second with 85.49 points, with Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri of Italy in third on 84.55 going into tomorrow’s free dance.

The women’s individual event began with the short programme with Japan’s Kaori Sakamoto taking the lead with 75.86 points.

Sakamoto’s compatriot Mai Mihara sits second in the standings with 74.58, with Belgium’s Loena Hendrickx in third on 74.24.

Finally, there was more Japanese success in the first junior final to conclude at the event, with Mao Shimada taking the women’s individual crown.
