Organisers for the Chengdu 2021 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games say they are confident with preparations, having seen COVID-19 protocols at the 2022 World Table Tennis Team Championships in the city.

With just eight months until the Games are scheduled to take place, Wang Guangliang, vice director-general of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Liaison at Chengdu 2021 said preparations in every sector are moving in the correct direction for the organisers.

"The success of the 2022 World Table Tennis Team Championships (WTTTC) last month in Chengdu gave us the confidence to host the Universiade under closed-loop," said Wang.

"There is no positive during the WTTTC."

The World Table Tennis Team Championships was the first major international sporting event held in China since the pandemic surged across the world, taking place from September 30 to October 9.

Wang presented a report in Brussels at the FISU Executive Committee meeting last week, explaining the Games are to be held in a closed-loop system with no quarantine period, with participants needing pre-departure and landing tests for COVID-19.

Shen Zhen, vice-president of FISU and the Federation of University Sports of China, told the Board China has changed its COVID-19 measures meaning the quarantine period across the country is now five days, down from seven.

Only one negative COVID-19 test is required now from incoming passengers in the 48 hours before boarding.

Winter and Summer FISU World University Games hosts Turin and Rhine-Ruhr also delivered presentations at the meeting, while Chungcheong was named the 2027 Summer World University Games host ahead of North Carolina.

The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games are scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8 2023, having been postponed for two years due to the pandemic.
