However, 32-year-old Chou won seven consecutive points to clinch a remarkable 14-21, 21-11, 22-20 victory.

"I tried my best," said Christie.

"Chou is a good player, and he never gives up.

"He proved that today.

"It's disappointing, I nearly got through to the semi-finals.

"But it is what it is."

Chou has taken more than an hour to record victory in three of his four matches at the World Championships so far, with this battle marking his second consecutive 71-minute match.

"Every time I played, I lost in the quarter-finals," said Chou.

"I've always been nervous in this round. 

"I'm really happy to make this comeback."

Tokyo 2020 gold medallist and top seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark awaits Chou in the semi-finals after cruising past Christie's compatriot Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 21-10, 21-10 in 41 minutes.
