The 38-year-old took the record from Ireland's Colin Lynch who covered 43.133 kilometres in Manchester in October 2016.

"It was a lot harder than I thought, I was expected to ride on the first 20 minutes with some reserve and then to go all out on the second half, but after 15 minutes I was already at my limit, but I managed to keep the pace and lap time," said Vromant.

"I am super happy with my distance and my lap time which was very consistent.

"Switzerland isn't so far from Belgium so my family and friends came to support.

"I could sometimes hear the voices of my children and my brother which helped me a lot."

Vromant won the silver medal at last year's postponed Paralympic Games in Japan in the C2 men's road time trial in a time of 36min 11.79sec.

He also won the bronze medal at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in 2021 and finished fourth in the time trial at the World G Cycling Championships in Cascais in Portugal.

Vromant's compatriots Griet Hoet and Anneleen Monsieur also attempted a world record over an hour in the women's tandem discipline.

The pair, bronze medallists at Tokyo 2020, tried to surpass the mark of 42.930km set by Australians Lindy Hou and Tolrrasa Gallagher in Sydney 17 years ago.

However, they were unable to complete the 60 minutes after Hoet fainted before the end of the record attempt.

The UCI has confirmed that both riders are safe and no fall was reported as well as wishing Hoet a swift recovery.
