France became the new continental champions after defeating Turkey in the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Blind Football European Championships in Pescara.

The two teams played out a cagey fixture in which both were evenly matched at the Delfino Training Centre in Città Sant'Angelo.

Neither could break the deadlock with the game ending 0-0 after regulation, sending the match to penalties.

France scored twice from the spot courtesy of Tidiane Diakite and Babacar Niang while Turkey could only beat the goalkeeper once through the boot of Somer.

The first match of the day saw England win the bronze medal after beating Germany on penalties in the third-place playoff.

Just like in the final, the two teams were inseparable in normal time as it ended 0-0 before going to the deciding shootout.

Germany missed all three of their spot kicks while England's Dan English converted his effort to win the match for his side.

"Penalties are always going to be a lottery and I think as a group we were gutted yesterday that we didn't get through against Turkey but we bounced back together, staff and players, and what a performance today to give us the bronze medal," said England goalkeeper Dylan Malpas.

The next IBSA blind football event scheduled is the Euro Challenge Cup in Stockholm from July 6 to 10 before Puebla in Mexico stages the Blind Football World Grand Prix from July 29 to August 8.
