Cambridge and Oxford won the women's and men's University Boat Races respectively, as the contests returned to their traditional home on the River Thames in London.

Cambridge extended their winning run in the women's race while Oxford triumphed in the men’s race for the first time in five years.

With a record time of 18 mins 22 secs, the Light Blues of Cambridge managed to extend their winning streak to five years in the women's race, as they claimed victory over Oxford by more than two lengths.

In the men's race the Dark Blues of Oxford dominated their opponents, winning in a time of 16:47 to give chief coach Sean Bowden a 13th success in his 25th year in the role.

Oxford has now won the men’s race on 81 occasions to date with Cambridge winning 85, while Cambridge now has 46 wins to Oxford’s 30 in the women’s competition.

"It was insane, it was fast, it was emotional all in one go," Cambridge President Bronya Sykes told BBC Sport. 

"I'm completely overwhelmed."

After two years away from its regular route because of coronavirus, the competition returned to the River Thames following the traditional course from Putney to Mortlake. 

The 2020 edition was cancelled, while the 2021 event took place without spectators on the Great Ouse in Ely - the first time the event had been staged outside London since 1944. 

Cambridge won both the men's and women's races at Ely in Cambridgeshire last year.
