Organisers are adamant a tight coronavirus protocol will be in place for the third edition of the West Asian Para Games, due to begin tomorrow in Bahrain.

More than 700 athletes from 11 countries are expected to compete at the 10-day event.

Athletics, wheelchair basketball, boccia, goalball, table tennis, powerlifting and badminton are all on the programme.

Fatima Al Bastaki, chief administrative officer for the Organising Committee, is among the officials to have reaffirmed that Bahrain can host a competition.

"The committees are putting in the effort and working hard to make sure the games are a success," Al Bastaki told GDN Online.

"The Bahrain Paralympic Committee head office has become a beehive that has been working around the clock, gathering expertise from all the committees to make these games as successful as the previous one."

Jordan staged the last West Asian Para Games in 2019, while the United Arab Emirates was the first host in 2017.

As part of the coronavirus countermeasures in force in Bahrain, competitors and attendees will be tested upon arrival in the country and on the fifth and 10th days of their visit.

Rapid tests will also be supplied to those working with organisers and the participants.

The multi-sport event is set to be held across four different locations in Bahrain.

Hassan Abdullatif, chief executive of the Organising Committee, has claimed it is the second-largest multi-sport event in the history of Bahrain.

It is due to have 70 classifiers in attendance.
