Mumm will meet South Korea's two-time Olympic silver medallist Choi Injeong whilst Foietta faces the challenging task of Estonia’s Olympic individual bronze medallist Katrina Lehis.

Both fencers struck upsets on their way to the first round of the main event on Saturday (February 12).

The Swede, who is 150 in the world, progressed through the preliminary round opener with a 15-10 victory against Belgium’s Amber de Pestel.

Eloise Vanryssel, France’s world number 88, awaited her in the following round with the contest soon becoming a nervous duel.

Mumm had enough quality to beat her opponent 13-11, despite 62 places separating them in the world rankings, to set up an opportunity to strike a massive shock against the world number four.

On the other side of the bracket, world number two Lehis, who also won Olympic team gold at Tokyo 2020, will dual Foietta.

Foietta, ranked 87 in the world, advanced past the first two rounds by comfortably beating Austria’s Leonore Praxmarer, and much like Mumm, getting through a tense second round match.

Ukraine’s Yana Shemyakina, the world number 30, challenged her opponent throughout the nine minutes, but Foietta secured a close 11-10 victory.

Another favourite, France’s world number five and 2014 European Championships silver medallist Marie-Florence Candassamy, will face Hungary’s world number 201 Tamara Gnam.

Gnam first progressed past Germany’s Anna Jonas, winning 15-14, and repeated the same result against Israel’s Sophia Vainberg.

Sweden’s Elvira Martensson, world number 313, has also set up an encounter against Italy’s Giulia Rizzi, world number 31, by beating Hungary’s Kinga Dekany 15-13,

Meanwhile, Belgium’s Anne Bultynck, world number 369, defeated Hungary’s Kata Mihaly to face South Korea’s Sera Song - the world number 11.

The individual round of 64 will start proceedings tomorrow with action continuing until a champion is crowned.

The team competition is due to follow on Sunday (February 13).
