England’s Tessa Davidson and Thailand’s Plyochompoo Laokiatphong have taken the first titles of the World Snooker Tour 2022 World Women’s Snooker Championship at the Crucible in Sheffield.

Home player Davidson comfortably fended off Poland’s Ewelina Pislewska in a 3-0 win to secure the senior tournament on home soil, while Laokiatphong defeated Australia's Lilly Meldrum to take home the juniors.

For the 52-year-old Davidson, it was  second trophy of 2022, following her British Open Seniors triumph.

She first defeated Belgium’s Anja Vandenbussche 3-0 in the last 16 before knocking-out compatriot Mary Talbot-Deegan 3-1 in the quarter-final.

Pislewska progressed through the last 16 and the next two rounds whitewashing the English trio of Jenny Pouler, Annette Bates, and Marianne Williams.

Davidson gave Poland’s Izabela Łąckat the same treatment in the semi-final, as well as Pislewska.

The final’s frame score ultimately ended 14-62; 38-52; 2-61 in Davidson’s favour

Laokiatphong’s path to victory in the under 21 tournament was much like the senior champion.

The 19-year-old whitewashed England’s Chloe White in the quarter-final, Zoe Killington in the semi-final and then Meldrum in the final.

But Meldrum still left the tournament having made a major impression.

At just 13-years-old she beat England’s Laura Killington by three frames in the last 16 and Steph Daughtery 3-1 in the quarter-final.

She then inched beyond Japan’s Miina Tani in a close 3-2 victory in the semi-final.

Meldrum met her match in the final where Laokiatphong beat her 63-41, 68-54, 57-38 to win her first major title.

The main tournament is due to begin tomorrow and conclude on Sunday (February 13).
