The 16-team International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying tournaments are set to begin across three locations tomorrow.

Four groups will take place simultaneously in Japan, Serbia and the United States with Australia, the World Cup hosts, and the US, the women’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic champions, handed guaranteed passages to the tournament.

The top three of each group will go through to the 12-team World Cup in Sydney, due to be held in September and October.

The teams playing in the Japanese city of Osaka, are Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Japan.

Japan and Canada will tip off first tomorrow.

The Canadians will play their second match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday (February 12) with the final game between Japan and Bosnia and Herzegovina due to be played at 9am the following day.

Due to the number of teams, they are all guaranteed to progress to the World Cup, so this qualifying tournament will offer good practice for each nation to assess and review their quality.

The tournament held in Washington DC features hosts and Olympic champions the United States, Belgium, Puerto Rico and Russia, with the latter’s participation to be finalised on February 12.

Belgium and Puerto Rico will get the group of five matches underway on opening night tomorrow.

They will go on to play the US and Russia in the following four days, with Puerto Rico versus Russia now due to take place on Monday (February 14).

In this tournament, the US and Russia will not face each other, while Russia's matches are scheduled to take place in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic because the US does not recognise Russia's Sputnik coronavirus vaccine.

Belgrade, the Serbian capital, will host the final two groups in a singular qualifying tournament.

Group A consists of Australia, Korea, Serbia and Brazil while France, China, Mali, and Nigeria, participate in Group B.

Australia and Brazil are due to play first in Group A tomorrow, with South Korea and Serbia following later in the day.

China against Nigeria begins Group B tomorrow, with France versus Mali following later in the day.

Each of the nations competing have qualified for the qualifying tournaments through their continental competition.

The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 is scheduled to be held from September 22 to October 1.
