Coaching teams for the Australian men's and women's wheelchair basketball sides have been named prior to the start of the 2022 season.

Craig Friday will return to coach the Rollers, the men's team, while Craig Campbell will take the main role at the Gliders, the women’s team.

Campbell has been promoted from assistant coach, a role he had held since 2017.

Nick Such completes the appointments by heading the Australian 3x3 wheelchair programme - the first person to do so.

Friday coached the men’s team to silver and gold medals at the Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Paralympics and he managed both the men's and women's sides at Tokyo 2020.

His coaching highlights include back-to-back men's gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2018 edition.

"Thanks to Basketball Australia for the opportunity to coach this team again, it's an absolute honour and privilege," Friday said.

"Our focus will be on the physical preparation of the athlete group, with discipline and establishing a winning culture."

Campbell's 20 years of experience includes securing a bronze medal at the IWBF's 2017 Men's Under-23 World Championship in an assistant position and leading local team of Kilsyth to the 2015 National Women's Basketball League title.

"I look forward to building on the foundation of the Aussie style of play implemented by Craig Friday in recent times; as we look to grow our pool of players competing for the honour of wearing the green and gold on the international stage," Campbell remarked.

Such, who is tasked with launching and constructing the 3x3 programme for the Commonwealth Games, was the 2018 Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Association Coach of the Year winner.

"With Para wheelchair 3X3 now included at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, it is our goal to build a program that gives us immediate representation on the world stage whilst also creating a new pathway for wheelchair basketball athletes, coaches and support staff," said Such.

The wheelchair programme will begin this month, while the Rollers and Gliders take part in training camps at the Australian Institute of Sport in preparation for World Cup qualifiers in Thailand in March.

The women's camp is scheduled for between February 16 and 20.

The men's camp will take place a few days later from February 23 to 27.
