Sotaro Fujiwara won Japan's first gold medal of the day as he beat Tato Grigalashvili by ippon in the men's under-81-kilograms weight class.

It is the 23-year-old's fourth Grand Slam victory and second in Paris following a 2019 triumph.

At the previous two events in the French capital, Fujiwara had to settle for bronze medals.

However, he beat Uzbekistan's Sharofiddin Boltaboev in the semi-final while Sami Chouchi of Belgium, who lost to Grigalashvili, claimed the other bronze medal.

Fujiwara's compatriot Sanshiro Murao then emulated his team-mate's success with a four-minute win against Mammadali Mehdiyev of Azerbaijan in the men's under-90kg class.

It marked Mehdiyev's fourth silver medal in a Grand Slam, while his only victory came in the 2019 Düsseldorf competition.

Frenchwoman Margaux Pinot put a temporary stop to Japan's dominance by subjecting defending champion Saki Niizoe to defeat in the women's under-70kg division.

Pinot, who won gold at the Tokyo 2020 mixed team event, was awarded a points victory after a tense 4min 29sec duel.

Double Olympic medallist Audrey Tcheuméo denied Japan again with a win over Mami Umeki in the women's under-78kg class.

The five-time European champion secured her fifth Paris Grand Slam title and seventh overall after 4min.

Toma Nikiforov defeated Israeli Peter Paltchik in the men's under-100kg final to claim Belgium's only gold medal in Paris.

Despite being two-time European champion it is just the second Grand Slam victory for Nikiforov.

Wakaba Tomita won the last women's tournament in the over-78kg event in just two and a half minutes over France's Romane Dicko.

It was an unexpected result as Dicko has never lost in a Grand Slam final and was tipped to add to her gold and bronze medals at Tokyo 2020.

Tsetsentsengel took the last gold medal available with what turned out to be a routine victory against Azerbaijian's Ushanhi Kokauri in the men's over-100kg.

Tel Aviv in Israel is set to hold the next Grand Slam from February 17 to 19.
