Dylan Alcott is poised to compete in his final Grand Slam event, with the home favourite set to retire at the conclusion of the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 31-year-old completed the Golden Slam last year, winning all four quad singles titles at Grand Slam events and winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Alcott will hope to claim an eighth Australian Open title in his final appearance.

"I feel grateful to be honest, because of all the support I’ve had," Alcott told Tennis Australia prior to the start of competition.

"This was my purpose, to change perception so that people with disabilities could live the lives they deserve to live, and I really wanted to get greater representation for athletes with disabilities.

"I’m not feeling nervous, I’m just pumped, I’ve done all the work.

"And more importantly I’m just going to try and enjoy myself.

"It's a celebration of everything we’ve done together."

The 15-time Grand Slam singles champion will face Dutchman Niels Vink in his opening match of the tournament.

The Australian Open will also feature Joachim Gérard, with the Belgian the defending champion in the men’s wheelchair singles event.

Gérard suffered a cardiac arrest at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics last year.

He has now been fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, which has allowed him to resume his career.

Gérard will face Japan’s Shingo Kunieda in his opening match of the singles competition.

Dutch star Diede de Groot, who matched Alcott by completing the Golden Slam last year, will start as the favourite for the women’s singles title.

De Groot will open her campaign against American Dana Mathewson.
