The 41-year-old called time on his career following the conclusion of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Doubles Masters.

Taylor won the quad doubles gold medal at three consecutive Paralympics at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

He has claimed a total of 120 doubles titles and 27 singles crowns.

Taylor and partner David Wagner won 11 Grand Slam titles together - four at the Australian Open and seven at the US Open.

"It was either tennis or golf and to this day I can’t tell you why I chose tennis but I went out, I started and I realised that I honestly couldn’t really do it," Taylor said.

"I figured out that the only way I was going to get stronger and get enough practice was just hitting against a wall, because nobody wanted to play with me. 

"I couldn’t hit the ball more than 10 feet, so I really didn’t really need to go on a tennis court. 

"And so I hit the ball against the wall and for hours and hours and hours and hours."

Following his retirement as a player, Taylor will still be involved in the game of tennis as the tournament director at the International Tennis Federation World Tennis Tour event held in Wichita.

He will also have a role with Wichita State University’s men’s tennis team

This may also not be the end of Taylor's Paralympic career, however.

He has revealed plans to take up boccia and hopes to qualify to represent the US in the sport at Paris 2024. 

Australian Dylan Alcott, considered the greatest quad player of all time, has also revealed he plans to retire.

Alcott, a three-time Paralympic champion, multiple Grand Slam winner and world number one, said he would hang up his racquet after January's Australian Open.

"I feel like I’ve done everything I need to do on the tennis court," Alcott, who completed the quad singles Grand Slam this year, said.

"I’ve known this day was coming for a while."
