Theo De Ramecourt of France and Daniela Moroz of the United States have been crowned Formula Kite world champions after a dramatic week of racing in Sardinia, Italy.

De Ramecourt topped the standings at the end of the opening series with a total of 29 points thanks to seven race wins.

He was joined in the final by compatriot Axel Mazella who finished second after the opening series to ensure automatic qualification to the final.

Mazella, who led after three days of the regatta, also recorded seven wins to his name, but surrendered his advantage on the final day of the opening series.

Italy’s Riccardo Pianosi and another Frenchman in Benoit Gomez, who both won their semi-final races, completed the line-up for the final.

As leader De Ramecourt needed only one race win to seal the title and had a chance in the first finals race, but after leading around most of the course was pipped to the line by Mazella.

De Ramecourt sealed the deal in the second race, with Mazella claiming silver and Pianosi completing the podium.

In the women’s event, defending world champion Moroz was dominant in the opening series winning 12 races on her way to scoring 46 points.

Britain’s Ellie Aldridge finished in second place on 66 points to also qualify automatically for the final race.

The line-up for the final was completed by two French kiteboarders, Poema Newland and Lauriane Nolot, who both won their semi-finals.

Moroz, who needed to win only one finals race to secure a fifth world title got the job done at the first time of asking, overtaking Nolot on the last downwind leg to seal victory.

Behind Moroz and Nolot, drama unfolded as Aldridge and Newland both crashed twice, with Aldridge recovering to finish third in the race, and second on the podium.

Nolot's second place in the finals race was enough for her to secure third overall.
