A strong fleet has assembled in Sardinia, Italy, for the first Formula Kite World Championships for two years, after coronavirus forced the cancellation of last year’s edition.

Multiple world champions are among the field of 92 men and 51 women set to compete at the event, with racing due to begin tomorrow and run until Sunday (October 17).

France’s Axel Mazella and Nicolas Parlier, both two-time world champions are set to compete, with Mazella coming into the event on good form after being crowned men’s European champion in Montpellier, France, last month.

Florian Gruber, an eight-time men’s world champion from Germany, and Daniela Moroz of the United States, a four-time women’s world champion also feature in the line-up.

Moroz also triumphed in the Formula Kite European Championships last month, winning the women’s open event, with the competition also being open to kiteboarders from outside the continent.

Kiteboarding is set to make its debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and Moroz, who will be competing at a fifth World Championships, says she believes the event is evolving for the better at the highest level.

"It’s the first Worlds in the Olympic quad so everything is much more competitive, and all the countries have been building their teams," said Moroz, as reported by Scuttlebutt.

"They all have coaches and the sport is getting much more professional overall.

"It’s really cool to see it develop in that way.

"I’m excited for the sport and to see where it goes from here."
