The opening day of the event at Lausanne’s World Archery Excellence Centre saw qualification take place in compound and recurve competitions.

European Games champion Nespoli topped the standings in men’s recurve qualification, with the Italian archer achieving a score of 689 points.

United States’ reigning World Cup champion Brady Ellison and the Netherlands’ Sjef van der Berg completed the top three, ending on 686 and 683.

"I’m quite happy about the qualification," Nespoli said.

"I shot one of my best results.

"It’s very important this year.

"But the competition hasn’t finished yet."

Nespoli had already secured a single quota place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and will hope to help Italy earn a team berth next month in Paris.

The women’s recurve competition saw Germany’s Kroppen and Lisa Unruh earn the top two places in qualification.

Kroppen achieved a score of 675 points in qualifying, with Unruh ending second on 673.

France’s Lisa Barbelin was a further two points back on 671 to round off the top three.

Britain’s Ella Gibson matched her international best score in the women’s compound event to top qualification.

A score of 705 points saw Gibson earn top seed status, with Spain’s Andrea Marcos finishing second on 701.

United States’ Linda Ochoa-Anderson completed the top three on the same score as Marcos, ending with one less shot in the 10-ring.

Dutch star Mike Schloesser earned the top seeding in the men’s compound competition with a score of 716 points.

Denmark’s Stephan Hansen and United States’ Braden Gellenthien both scored 713 points to finish with the second and third seed status.

Elimination matches will take place tomorrow.
