Savannah Vanderwier marked her Archery World Cup debut in Guatemala City with a stand-out win over fellow American and top seed Paige Pearce, to reach Saturday's (April 24) compound final fours.

The 21-year-old from Sheffield, Texas defeated Pearce in a shoot-out in the quarter-finals, scoring a better 10 in a tiebreak on an overcast and breezy afternoon at the Sport Complex Los Arcos.

"Oh, my goodness, it feels amazing," she told World Archery.

"Honestly, I'm still so shaky.

"I got so nervous for that, which is so funny because I normally don't get that nervous."

She will next face Denmark's Tanya Gellenthien in the second semi-final after Nora Valdez of Colombia has met the US world number one Alexis Ruiz, who defeated Colombia's Sara Lopez, the world number two, in her quarter-final.

There will be a 50 per cent US presence in the men's compound final fours as well through world number one Braden Gellenthien and 2018 circuit champion Kris Schaff, who will be joined by the reigning Archery World Cup champion Mike Schloesser of The Netherlands and Slovakia's Jozef Bosansky.

The season-opening event in Guatemala City was due to make its debut as a leg of the circuit in 2020 but that plan was put on hold for a year because of the pandemic.

Competition continues tomorrow with recurve eliminations and then team competition for both recurve and compound.
