Benjamin Karl clinched his fifth world title after triumphing in the parallel slalom at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard World Championships in Rogla.

The Austrian defeated compatriot Andreas Prommegger in the big final, crossing the line in 55.58sec.

Defending champion Dmitry Loginov, who retained the parallel giant slalom world title yesterday, finished with bronze after winning the small final against fellow Russian Andrey Sobolev.

The 35-year-old Karl achieved his third parallel slalom world gold medal with his victory, having previously topped the podium in 2009 and 2011.

He also earned world titles in the parallel giant slalom in 2011 and 2013.

Sofia Nadyrshina took the first world title of her career with victory in the women's parallel slalom.

The 17-year-old Russian finished with silver in yesterday's parallel giant slalom and also achieved three junior world titles last year.

Competing under the Russian Ski Federation banner due to World Anti-Doping Agency sanctions levied against the country, Nadyrshina recorded the winning time of 58.13 in the big final to beat Germany's Ramona Theresia Hofmeister.

Hofmeister was joined on the podium by compatriot Selina Jörg, who placed third after defeating Megan Farrell of Canada in the small final.

Switzerland's Julie Zogg failed in her title defence, finishing ninth.

Both slalom events were set to be part of the 2021 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships in Zhangjiakou in China, but the combined contest was cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The FIS adopted a multi-venue approach instead and delegated the Alpine snowboard competitions to Rogla in Slovenia.

The World Championships are now scheduled to continue with moguls and aerials in Almaty in Kazakhstan from March 8 to 11.
