The International Surfing Association (ISA) has launched the Adaptive Surf Instructor Certification Programme to aid the development of Para-surfing.

The ISA is recognised by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the International Federation for Para-surfing, also known as adaptive surfing.

Adaptive surfing is a version of the sport for athletes with impairments which require them to use specialised equipment or receive assistance to access the water and surf.

This programme is part of the ISA's ambition to create a global platform for universal access to the sport.

The Adaptive Surf Instructor Programme focuses on grassroots development and furthering surfing's inclusivity.

It is hoped that the certification course can ensure teachers of adaptive surfing are trained in how to develop athletes, and by extension the sport.

Virtual delivery of the programme is set to be officially launched from December 7 to 11, with the initial course open to those with prior experience instructing adaptive surfing and involvement with an adaptive surfing organisation or surf-therapy programme.

ISA presenters Dana Cummings and Benjamin Clifford will lead the programme.

"Surfing has the power to heal and bring joy to the lives of those it touches," ISA President Fernando Aguerre said.

"In our mission to make the world a better place through surfing - we are working to break down barriers to accessibility and to enhance opportunities for people of all abilities to experience the thrill of riding a wave.

"Adaptive surfing is a strategic priority for us and a key area of growth where we are committed to opening new doors to people who never thought surging was possible, from the grassroots level to elite National and World Championships.

"The ISA's new certification programme is another important milestone in ensuring that there is a global standard for safety, instruction and development so we can help the discipline flourish equally throughout our 108 member nations."

The certification programme was developed in partnership with AmpSurf and Surfability UK, with members of the global adaptive surfing community and the Foundation for Global Sports Development offering support.

The ISA held its first World Para Surfing Championships in 2015, and the most recent edition earlier this year attracted 140 athletes from 24 nations.
