The assistant coach of the United States' national basketball team, Steve Kerr, has said preparations are continuing as if this year's Olympic Games in Tokyo will go ahead as planned, even though there is growing concern over the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the event.

As reported by NBC Sports, USA Basketball intends to open its training camp for the team in Las Vegas prior to July 4 – at least 20 days before the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony is scheduled.

The national governing body has put together a list of 44 finalists for the Olympics but it could be limited in who it is able to take as the National Basketball Association season, suspended last week due to the coronavirus pandemic, could extend into July and August and overlap with the Games.

Despite this, Kerr, the assistant to US head coach Gregg Popovich, stated in a news conference they are moving ahead as normal.

"Pop and I have spoken a couple of times over the last week or so," he was reported as saying by ESPN.

"And everything's just up in the air.

"There's no sense of whether things are going to be delayed or anything."

He added: "We're all kind of sitting here wondering what's going to happen, and so is the rest of the world.

"We're just going to plan as if this is going to happen, and we're going to try and put together a roster, and that's all we can do."

The US men have won the Olympic basketball gold medal 15 times, including at the last three Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) claimed yesterday there is no need for "any drastic decisions at this stage" regarding the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

In a lengthy statement released following crisis talks with International Federations, the IOC dismissed "counter-productive" speculation that Tokyo 2020 could be postponed or cancelled and repeated its insistence the Games would go ahead as planned.

This is despite the COVID-19 outbreak having forced a near shutdown of all sport worldwide, wreaking havoc on the qualification process for the Olympics and Paralympics.

Coronavirus has now hit all 50 states in the US.

There have so far been 108 deaths in the country from the virus and more than 6,300 confirmed cases nationwide.
