The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has postponed two rounds of qualifying fixtures for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Games scheduled to take place across the continent between March 23 and 31 and June 1 and 9 are all affected.

They are currently "postponed to later dates" but the AFC said some matches could still take place as planned.

This would only be if the "safety of all individuals involved" could be assured, however, and both countries must mutually agree.

The AFC and FIFA would also need to approve this arrangement.

Matches scheduled for March have been tipped to be played in October while the June games could be played in November.

Football Federation Australia have said they will not pursue matches in March or June to put the "health and welfare of all players, coaches, staff, and fans first".

"FIFA and the AFC will continue to assess the situation in relation to COVID-19 and will decide whether further changes to the schedule of Asian FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers are required, always with the aim of protecting the safety and health of all individuals involved," FIFA said.

The crisis has also impacted the AFC's Olympic qualifiers as the two-leg women's play-off between China and South Korea has been pushed back until June.

Australia women's second leg in Vietnam will be played behind closed doors tomorrow with the visitors boasting a 5-0 lead and almost assured of a Tokyo 2020 place.

Other events to be postponed include the AFC Futsal Championship in Turkmenistan which was scheduled for between February 26 and March 8.

New dates of between August 5 and 16 have been set.

This event is a qualifier for the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania, while the AFC Congress and matches in its club competitions have also been impacted.

A huge number of other sporting events have been affected by the coronavirus since the outbreak originated in Wuhan.

There have now been more than 80,000 reported cases in China and more than 114,000 across the world.

More than 4,000 people have died.
