Gu proved the dominant skier in the women’s halfpipe competition from the start of the day, as the 16-year-old topped the qualification standings at the Leysin Park and Pipe centre.

The Chinese star set the standard in the final by receiving a score of 90.66 points in the first of three competition runs.

She improved in the second round with her best performance receiving 93.00 points, moving her closer to adding gold to her slopestyle silver.

Gu’s dominance was completed with a final run score of 90.00 points.

Each of her three runs in the final would have proved enough to be crowned as champion.

Team-mate Li Fanghui proved the closest challenger to Gu by ending on 85.66 points, ensuring China of gold and silver.

A Chinese podium clean sweep was prevented by America's, who achieved a best score of 77.33 points. 

China’s Wu Meng ended just outside the medal places on 75.33 points. 

The US gold medal drought came to an end with Fagan leading from start to finish of the men’s slopestyle competition.

Fagan began the final by topping the standings with a score of 87.33 points, before improving to 90.66 with his next attempt.

The score came under pressure in the final run of the event, as a clean run from Sweden’s Melvin Moren left both skiers nervously awaiting the judges’ verdict.

Moren fell narrowly short in his bid for gold by finishing on 89.33 points, giving him the silver medal behind Fagan.

There was further cause for celebration for Fagan, with his room-mate Hunter Henderson earning the bronze medal.

Henderson finished the competition with a best score of 88.66 points to round off the podium places.
