The University of Lausanne (UNIL), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and High School of Health Vaud have teamed up with Lausanne Univeristy Hospital (CHUV) and Lausanne 2020 to develop the programme. 

It is set to be offered to young athletes at the Youth Olympic Village, otherwise known as the Vortex, throughout the Games. 

Athletes based at the Saint Moritz Olympic Village will also be able to experience it.

The general public have been given the opportunity to try out the application at the Health for Performance pavilion here. 

To use it, participants first create an avatar that guides them through various tests. 

The software then analyses the test results and gives suggestions to help athletes train more efficiently and reduce the chance of injury while competing. 

It includes other risk-prevention-related features, such as a virtual-reality system that allows them to experience and detect a concussion, and a programme providing advice on stress management, sleep and nutrition.

Users can also test balance and coordination on connected treadmills, learn how to prevent sports injuries, speak with physical-training experts and measure their performance against professional athletes.

From next year, anyone will be able to use the Health for Performance application at a new smart training building, set to be constructed at the UNIL-EPFL sports centre.

This initiative builds on the work being done for the Youth Olympic Games and is being carried out as part of the universities' and CHUV's involvement in Smart Move, a network of sports-related organisations in French-speaking Switzerland. 

Smart Move aims to further develop the sports ecosystem in and around Lausanne.

A record 1,872 athletes are in the Swiss city to compete, with action continuing until January 22.
