Morocco claimed a clean sweep of the kata gold medals as action begun today at the African Karate Federation Senior Championships in Gaborone.

Adnane Elhakimi and Sanae Agalmam won the respective men’s and women’s individual events and also helped their teams to victory at the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Centre.

Elhakimi beat Egypt’s Ahmed Shawky to individual glory with the men’s bronze medals going to Algeria’s Mouad Ouites and home favourite Ofentse Bakwadi.

Agalmam proved too strong for Egypt’s Sarah Sayed in the women’s individual final.

South Africa’s Maxine Willemse and Algeria’s Manal Kamilia Hadj Saïd were the bronze medallists.

In the men’s team event, Elhakimi teamed up with Bilal Benkacem and Mohammed El Hanni.

They saw off Egypt’s trio in the final after Botswana and Algeria had been confirmed as the bronze medallists.

The women’s team event saw Agalmam join forces with Bertali Lamyae and Aya En-Nesyry as they beat Algeria to top honours.

The bronze medals went to Egypt and Botswana.

Action in Gaborone is due to continue tomorrow with medals being awarded in 10 individual kumite weight categories.
