The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has announced its finalists for the Team USA Best of March Awards.

In the three categories as usual five men, five women and three teams have been nominated, including Alpine skiing sensation Mikaela Shiffrin.

The 24-year-old’s season came to and end with a bang last month as she sealed four of the International Ski Federation’s (FIS) five World Cup titles including in the overall category.

She also won the FIS crystal globe for giant slalom, slalom and super-G while picking up a further three World Cup victories across the month.

At 24, she is already considered one of the greatest Alpine skiers of all time.

Up against her for the monthly award is gymnast Jade Carey and Para Nordic skier Kendall Gretsch among others.

Carey has been nominated after winning four gold medals at World Cup events in Doha in Qatar and Baku in Azerbaijan, while Para skier Gretsch is up for the award after winning the overall World Cup biathlon title in the women’s sitting division.

Winter sports also feature heavily amongst the men’s nominees.

Figure skater Nathan Chen became the first US athlete to win back-to-back World Championships at this year’s event in Saitama in Japan, while snowboarder Noah Elliott won the men’s Para snowboard cross world title in Pyha in Finland.

Among the non-winter nominees is shooter Vincent Hancock, winner of the men’s skeet at the Acapulco World Cup in Mexico without missing a single target, equalling the world record in the process.

Meanwhile the US men’s national rugby sevens side is among the nominees for the team award.

They have been put forward after winning gold on home soil at the World Rugby Sevens Series event in Las Vegas.
