Defending champions North Korea suffered a 4-1 defeat to Germany as action began in Group C and D at the FIFA under-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay.

A free-kick in the first 15 minutes was converted by Charlotte Blumel before Germany doubled their lead over the two-time champions as Gi Corley got on the end of a cross form Shekiera Martinez at the Estadio Alberto Suppici in Colonia Del Sacramento.

Yun Ji-Hwa pulled one back to halve the German advantage at the mid-point of the second-half but Corley responded with her second to keep the two-goal lead.

Ensuring they took all three points from the game and go top of Group C, German substitute Sophie Weidauer made it 4-1 in the late stages of the match.

The 2010 champions South Korea were also victims of an upset as they lost their opening game to Spain at the Estadio Charrúa, in Montevideo.

Gwak Royeong hit the Spanish crossbar in the opening stages of the match but no South Korean strike was able to cross the goal line as Spain won 4-0.

Captain Eva Navarro opened the scoring in the first half with the only goal, before the Spanish team ran away with the game in the second half.

Claudia Pina and Paola Hernandez penetrated the South Korean defence to make it 3-0 before Pina linked up with Navarro for the best goal of the game to increase their lead.

Pina was unlucky not to end the game with a hat-trick after hitting the crossbar but was awarded player of the match.

Elsewhere in Group D, Canada and the United States kept clean sheets and claimed three points as they both registered 3-0 wins over Colombia and Cameroon in Montevideo and Colonia Del Sacramento respectively.
