Uzbekistan's Khikmatillokh Turaev provided his country with their first gold medal at their home International Judo Federation Tashkent Grand Prix.

Turaev had to eliminate the men's under-73 kilograms top seed Tommy Macias of Sweden in the third round and he carried that momentum with him to the final at the Uzbekistan Sports Centre.

Great home support helped him to overcome three minutes of golden score to take the win.

His opponent, Igor Wandtke of Germany, was penalised three times throughout the scoreless match to be eliminated from the contest.

The bronze medals were awarded to Russia's Oleg Babgoev and Victor Scvortov of the United Arab Emirates.

In the other men's competition, the under-81kg event, a tight contest also decided the victor.

Mongolia's Nyamsuren Dagvasuren was aggressive in the gold medal match against Didar Khamza of Kazakhstan, scoring a waza-ari first but he also received two shidos.

The Kazakh judoka fought back with only three seconds left in normal time to even the scores and force additional time.

Nyamsuren had to be careful of conceding a third and final shido and Khamza took advantage and scored a second waza-ari to end the match and take the victory.

Greece's Alexios Ntanatsidis and Kyrgyzstan's Vladimir Zoloev took their countries' first medals of the tournament by winning the bronze medals.

In the women's categories, Austria also picked up their first medals with a gold and bronze.

Michaela Polleres took revenge on 2017 junior world champion Giovanna Scoccimarro of Germany in the women's under-70kg final.

Polleres took bronze at last year's World Junior Championships but triumphed over her Italian rival in Tashkent.

A counter-attack resulted in a waza-ari score for the Austrian who controlled the remainder of the match for her second Grand Prix gold of the season.

Hungary's Szabina Gercask and Venezuela's Elvismar Rodriguez took the bronze medals.

In the women's under-63kg event, Austria's Kathrin Unterwurzacher earned bronze alongside Slovenia's Andreja Leski as Mongolia won gold.

Baldorj Mungunchimeg beat outsider Maria Centracchio of Italy, whose journey to the gold medal match was unexpected considering she ranks outside the top 100.

Nevertheless the Italian leaves Tashkent with an IJF Grand Prix silver medal.
