Two members of the Iranian delegation for the Indoor Archery World Cup Final in Las Vegas have not been able to travel to the United States for the event after they were unable to secure visas in time.

The governing body confirmed to insidethegames that 14 of the 16-strong Iranian delegation made it to the American city yesterday but they were forced to miss the first day of competition.

World Archery have vowed to "make arrangements" for the Iranian athletes who arrived late at the event following delays in being issued with visas.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) had assisted the Local Organising Committee in assuring they picked up their visas on Wednesday (February 8).

"They missed one day of competition, but arrangements will be made so they can catch up," a World Archery spokesperson told insidethegames.

It is not yet clear how World Archery plan to go about this, however.

The problems for the Iranian team arose following the travel restrictions imposed on citizens from Iran and six other Muslim majority countries in an executive order signed on January 27 by US President Donald Trump.

After initial delays, Iran Archery Federation President Mohammad Ali Shojaei announced in a message posted on the website of the national governing body earlier this week that requests for just five of the 16 had been successful.

He then clarified yesterday that all 16 had been issued.

The Iranian squad includes male and female athletes across senior, junior and youth age group categories along with several coaches.

Archery is one of the most popular sports in Iran.

Zahra Nemati became the first Iranian woman to win a gold medal at either the Olympic or Paralympic Games when she climbed the women’s individual recurve W1/W2 podium at the 2012 edition of the latter in London.

The 31-year-old, who is not competing in Las Vegas, participated at both Games last year in Rio de Janeiro and carried the Iranian flag at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics.

Qualification at the Indoor Archery World Cup Final, taking place alongside the mass participation Las Vegas shoot event, began yesterday and Atanu Das of India leads the way in the men's recurve with 595.

Song Ji-yung of South Korea topped women's recurve qualification on 588, while Greg Poole of the United States shot perfectly to lead the men's compound.

Sharon Carpenter, also of the US, sits in top spot in the women's compound.
