Maxime Nocher claimed victory in the opening race of the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) KiteFoil GoldCup at the Pearl here today.

The kitesurfer, from Monaco, had showed his ability in the last leg of the series, which took place in Gizzeria in  Italy.

On that occasion, he closed the gap to his French rival Axel Mazella in the final days of the event to end second in the overall standings.

Nocher is instead looking to lead from the front in Qatar, the 22-year-old triumphing in the first race.

The seven-time world champion finished ahead of Mazella, who had to make do with a second place finish.

Poland’s Maks Zakowski completed the top three positions, ending ahead of his compatriot Blazej Ozog.

Elena Kalinina was the best placed female, the Russian finishing in 12th place.

The result justified her status as the pre-event favourite to win the women’s title, with her nearest challenger Manon Calvignac of France ending a further nine places back.

The competition features 37 riders from 18 nations.

Proceedings are being hosted by the Qatar Sailing and Marine Sports Association and are due to take place until Saturday (November 19).
