Nigeria's Lucy Ejike won gold in the women's under 61 kilogram category as she became the first athlete to deny Egypt's Fatma Omar a Paralympic powerlifting title.

Ejike's best lift of 142kg, a world record, secured her fifth Paralympic medal and her third gold following wins in both Beijing and London in different weight categories.

Omar came in second place with a best attempt of 140kg and took the silver medal, arguably the biggest shock of the day in Riocentro pavilion 2.

Omar's dominance in women's powerlifting was shattered as she suffered her first defeat since the introduction of the sport at Sydney 2000.

"I am not feeling very well because it is the first time I ever lost a gold medal," said Omar.

"It is sad since this is my last Paralympic Games, but thank God I got a medal for my country one more time."

The bronze medal in this category was won by China's Yang Yan.

She managed a best attempt of 128kg to win her third Paralympic medal.

In the only men's competition of the day, Liu Lei of China claimed his third Paralympic gold medal as he won the men's under 72kg final.

Lei's best lift of 221kg saw him narrowly add to his titles from London 2012 and Beijing 2008.

Iraq's Rasool Mohsin had a bittersweet afternoon after he set a world record minutes after failing to win the gold medal.

The Iraqi failed to lift 229kg in the final round, meaning he won silver, before going on to lift a world record 227kg in the fourth round after the conclusion of the event.

The fourth round does not count to the overall competition.

"It is totally strange," said Mohsin.

"Really in my first retry I lifted 229kg but the judges had another opinion.

"I thought it was wrong for their part but thank god I could lift more and break the world record."

The bronze in the men's under 72kg event was won by Nnamdi Innocent of Nigeria with a best lift of 210kg.

In the final event of the day, China's Tan Yujiao dominated the women's under 67 kilogram final with a best lift of 135kg, setting a world record in the process.

Tan lifted 22kg more than her closest rival as she improved on the silver medal she won in London four years ago.

Raushan Koishibayeva of Kazakhstan finished in second with a best attempt of 113kg to claim her first Paralympics medal, whilst the bronze went to Egyptian Amal Mahmoud with a lift of 108kg.
