China’s Cuijuan Xiao broke the women’s up to 55 kilogram division world record to claim a a gold medal at the 2015 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) European Open Championships in Hungarian city Eger.

The Beijing 2008 champion was competing in the Open event and delivered a superb performance with her lift of 126kg surpassing the weight of Nigerian world champion Esther Oyema by one kilogram to add to the Asian title she won earlier this year.

Russia's European champion Tamara Podpalnaya faced strong competition from Mariana Shevchuk in her attempt to retain her title, but her lift of 113kg eventually proved enough to see off the threat of her Ukrainian rival.

Shevchuk settled for the silver medal having achieved a total of 106kg, a junior world record, while Britain’s Natalia Blake completed the podium positions after lifting 90kg.

Further success for Russian lifters came in the women’s up to 61kg event as Irina Kazantseva ended the competition on 110kg after three successful lifts, claiming both the European and Open titles.

Poland’s Malgorzata Halas-Korazewska edged out Hafize Bingul for the silver medal after lifting two kilograms more than her Turkish opponent with her effort of 99kg.

A personal best performance from Britain’s Michael Yule saw him receive gold in the men’s up to 80kg competition, moving up to sixth place in the world rankings with the top eight on February 29 earning automatic Rio 2016 berths.

“With competition for Rio extremely competitive our athletes are fully aware of the hard work in training and competition that is required to give them the best possible chance of qualifying,” said Tom Whittaker, British Weightlifting Paralympic performance manager.

“Micky has fully embraced the challenge and continues to save his best for when it matters.

“His time with strength and conditioning coach Neil Crosbie, who was worked closely both with Micky on an individual basis and the world class programme as a whole, has been of huge benefit and really helped develop his power for competition.”

The Briton’s lift only proved enough for bronze in the Open event, with China’s Xiaofei Gu and Iran’s Ali Hosseini reaching the top two steps on the podium following lifts of 221kg and 200kg respectively.

A third Chinese Open title of the day came in the men’s up to 88kg event as 22-year-old Jixiong Ye lifted 226kg, while European gold was won by Poland’s Wawrzyniec Latus after successfully lifting 192kg.
