Demir Elmaagacli secured Turkey their first-ever medal in individual competition at an Archery World Cup Final, beating India’s Abhishek Verma to compound men’s gold in Mexico City.

In a tense showdown, seventh seed Elmaagacli prevailed 145-143 to win his first individual medal at a senior event.

Verma started strongly with a 10 and a solid 29 for his first end to take a point lead, before a wild eight in the second set allowed Elmaagacli to take the upper hand 57-56.

Verma rallied though to shoot a perfect 30 and the single-point advantage reverted back to the Indian, with the score at 86-85 after nine arrows.

It was at that point in the match, however, that Elmaagacli made the difference, scoring two consecutive perfect 30s to claim the title.

"Throughout this year, I have believed in myself," he said.

"I was always close, but I couldn’t get it before.

"Ahead of this event, I worked very hard, I trusted myself and now I accomplished my goal.

"I’m very happy."

France’s Dominique Genet took the men’s bronze medal with a 149-point match total against home favourite Mario Cardoso, ensuring his best finish at an Archery World Cup Final to date.

Meanwhile, Colombia’s Sara Lopez became only the second person in history to win the women’s compound title twice - and the first to do so in consecutive years - after beating seventh seed Mariia Vinogradova of Russia in the final.

Vinogradova held for two ends against the top seed before dropping eights in both the third and fourth ends to find herself trailing by four points with only three arrows to go.

She started the last end with a seven, followed by nine and 10, but a faultless 30 from Lopez saw her clinch the match, 145-137.

The United States’ Jamie Van Natta, the only other woman in the circuit’s 10-year history with multiple crowns, won her two titles four years apart in 2008 and 2012.

"I’m extremely happy," said Lopez.

"Today was a really hard day, with lots of pressure, but I enjoyed it - and I’m especially thankful to the Mexicans who supported me out there."

The women's bronze medal match saw Mexico’s Linda Ochoa and compatriot Stephanie Salinas face-off, the former claiming a 143-140 victory.

Denmark claimed the compound mixed team title, beating hosts Mexico, whose team was made up of Ochoa and Cardoso.

Entering the match as favourites having won two stage golds in 2015, Denmark’s Erika Anear and Stephan Hansen produced a solid performance which saw them let just one arrow leak outside of the gold in their 16 shots.

Mexico trailed from the very beginning when Ochoa opened the match with an eight, and just as they seemed to be edging their way back into contention, Cardoso dropped a seven to close the second end with the Danes going on to seal a 151-144 victory.

"The match against Mexico was a bit tough because there was so many people cheering them on," said Hansen, the compound men’s world champion.

"We just did all our best and all we could, and it was enough."
