Fifth seeds Russia claimed their first world title in women’s recurve team competition for 28 years as the World Archery Championships came to a close in Copenhagen.

Fresh from their semi-final triumph against top seeds South Korea, the trio of Inna Stepanova, Ksenia Perova and 19-year-old Tuyana Dashidorzhieva hit a 10 and two nines to win the final in a shoot-off against India, whose team of Deepika Kumari, Majhi Laxmirani and Buriuly Rimil had been looking to secure their nation’s first-ever world title in any category.

The Indians were within touching distance of taking victory, having established a 4-0 lead after the first two sets, but nerves soon got the better of them at Christiansborg Palace, the Danish Parliament building.

They lost the next two sets, shooting just 52 and 50 points after posting 56 and 54 in the first two, and were then unable to prevent Russia completing the turnaround with the tiebreaker arrows.

"We didn’t care about the scores," said Stepanova, part of the Russian team, along with Perova, that finished fourth at the London 2012 Olympics .

"We believed we could win and so we did.

"The atmosphere was great, and this brings a huge amount of prestige for our team ahead of Rio 2016."

Russia’s last victory in the women’s team competition came in Adelaide in 1987, two years prior to the country’s most recent World Championships victory in Lausanne where Stanislav Zabrodsky won the men’s individual and team titles as part of the Soviet Union.

Defending champions and reigning Olympic champions South Korea claimed the bronze medal after three sets against Japan; a repeat of the gold medal match at the Antalya World Cup stage final in May, when Japan won 6-2.

In the equivalent men’s event final, South Korea comfortably overcame reigning Olympic champions Italy to the gold medal, as sets of 54, 55 and 58 translated into three set wins and a 6-0 victory.

Individual Olympic champion Oh Jin Hyek, and team mates Kim Woojin and Ku Bonchan, proved too strong for Italy, who had London 2012 gold medallists Michele Frangilli and Mauro Nespoli among their ranks along with David Pasqualucci.

The bronze medal was won by Chinese Taipei thanks to a 6-2 win against the United States after four sets.

Woojin followed up his success in the team event by winning the individual men’s recurve crown at the expense of The Netherlands’ Rick van der Ven.

With Woojin leading 5-1 after three sets, the South Korean matched Van der Ven’s total of 30 with a final 10 to draw the fourth and secure his second world title with a 6-2 win.

As for the individual women’s recurve event, Woojin’s compatriot Ki Bo Bae took top honours to add a world title to the Olympic gold she won at London 2012.

Leading Chinese Taipei’s Lin Shih-Chia 5-3 going into the fifth and final regulation set, Ki only needed a set draw to win the match.

Having both started with a nine and a 10 in the fifth, Lin landed her final arrow in the nine before Ki stepped up to hit a 10 and seal victory.

The individual men’s recurve bronze medal went to Japan’s Takaharu Furukawa with Venezuela’s Elias Malave just missing out on a medal, while South Korea’s Choi Misun beat India’s Laxmirani Majhi to round off the women’s podium.

The 2015 World Archery Championships was the biggest ever with 623 archers from 96 nations competing across 1,097 matches for 10 sets of medals.

"I am pleased and proud of the World Championship we have been able to have in the heart of our capital together with our partners Sport Event Denmark and the city of Copenhagen," said Rolf Lind, President of Archery Denmark.

"The finals at Christiansborg Palace have placed an iconic legacy to the pulse of the city.

"I am sure that this World Championships will be one that the entire archery community in Denmark will remember and look back at with great pride in many years ahead."
