The winning designer will see their artwork featuring on the face of the gold, silver and bronze medals won at the Games, scheduled to place from February 12 to 21.

They will also receive tickets to the Opening Ceremony and sports competition, as well as a full collection of medals featuring their design.

Submissions will now be accepted until June 1 this year before the entries go before a judging panel made up of the Young Ambassadors and Young Reporters who have been involved in the Youth Olympic Games since the first edition in Singapore in 2010.

Also featuring on the panel are International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and IOC Athletes' Commission chair Claudia Bokel and Angela Ruggiero, the chair of the IOC Coordination Commission for Lillehammer 2016 and a Nagano 1998 Olympic ice hockey gold medallist.

"As an Olympic champion I know what it means to receive a medal," Ruggiero said.

"Something you will cherish for the rest of your life.

"To be the designer of that medal is incredibly prestigious.

"The Youth Olympic Games is all about involving young people and it is a great honour for me to be on the judging panel and see what the creative minds from around the world can produce."

The contest forms part of the IOC's mission to see the Youth Olympics produced not only for young people, but also by young people.

The winner of the competition to design the medals for last year's Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing was Matej Čička, a young sports fan from Slovakia, for his "Track of Winners" concept.
