The London 2012 Paralympic silver medallist started with a first round lift of 112kg at the event in Dubai, but then lifted 117kg and 122kg in the next two rounds to secure the world title and better her previous best of 114kg, set last May when she won European gold.

She then went even further and lifted 126kg in the fourth round to break her own world record, while Ukraine's two-time Paralympic champion Lidiia Soloviova took silver with a lift of 105kg and Egypt's Gihan Abdelaziz claimed bronze with 101kg.

Lafina's compatriot Anastasia Kondrashina lifted 72kg to win the junior gold medal, and was joined on the podium by Iraq's Zahraa Al Maliki and home athlete Maryam Alzeyoudi, who won the United Arab Emirates' first medal of the competition.

Meanwhile, London 2012 silver medallist Mohamed Elelfat lifted 217kg in the men's under 72kg event to secure Egypt's second gold of the event.

He out-lifted Iranian world record holder Roohallah Rostami, winner of the silver medal with a lift of 209kg, and Russia's Sergei Sychev, who lifted 206kg to pick up bronze.

Brazilian Rafael Vansolin took the junior gold with a new junior world record of 112kg, while Farhod Umirzakov of Uzbekistan managed 110kg to take silver and Iran's Saeed Heydarpour finished with bronze after a lift of 104kg.

Chinese Paralympic champion Lei Liu lifted 203kg - more than three times his own body weight - to take the men's -65kg gold and was joined on the podium by Russian silver medallist Ayrat Zakiev, who lifted 199kg, and Egypt's bronze medallist Shabaan Ibrahim, who lifted 198kg.

Iran's Amir Sajid Youssefi won the junior gold, with Russia's Denis Maksimenko taking silver and Libya's Saad Taiyb claiming bronze.

The Championships are due to continue tomorrow with the women's under 55kg, under 61kg and under 67kg events, and the men's under 80kg competition.
