Zoe Newson celebrates her London 2012 bronze but now her club, Suffolk Spartans, is facing the threat of closureAugust 21 - Suffolk Spartans, the powerlifting club which produced London 2012 bronze medallist Zoe Newson, is on the verge of closure because of financial problems.

The club, based in East Bergholt has only £35 ($55/€41) left in its bank account and has admitted that it may not be able to continue for much longer.

"Any costs come out of our own pockets, which can't continue indefinitely, so there's a real danger the club will close," Suffolk Spartans coach Louise Pennell told BBC Suffolk.

Newson finished third in the under 40 kilogram class at London 2012 having been nurtured by Suffolk Spartans.

The club, founded in 2007, has not received any funding since Babergh District Council stopped providing expenses shortly before London 2012.

"The only reason we didn't close then was because we were so close to London 2012 and we couldn't miss the opportunity with Zoe," said Pennell.

"There doesn't appear to be any legacy as there's no new equipment or funding coming our way, despite us producing the UK's only Paralympic powerlifting medallist since Athens 2004."
