Sutton ArenaNovember 26 - David Weir's incredible performance at London 2012, where he won four Paralympic gold medals, is to be recognised by his Council in Sutton who are renaming the local sports stadium after him, it has been announced.

The Sutton Arena, which is located in Carshalton in Surrey, is to be rechristened the David Weir Arena in honour of the Briton's achievements at London 2012 where he won the 800 metres, 1500m, 5,000m and marathon in the T54 category.

"I am absolutely delighted," said Weir.

"It is a very great honour.

"I have trained there and taken part in a few events there and it's an excellent facility.

"My daughter goes to the Arena with her school and it will be very exciting for her to see my name over the door."

This latest honour follows on from 2009 when he was made a Freedom of the Borough by Sutton Council after his performance at Beijing 2008, where he won the 800m and 1500m and a silver in the 400m and bronze in the 5,000m.

"David's achievements are absolutely astonishing and they provide great pleasure and pride for everyone in the Borough," said Ruth Dombey, the Leader of Sutton Council.

"Renaming Sutton Arena in David's honour is our way of showing the affection and respect we have for him."

The centre, then named Carshalton Sports Arena, was first used in 1953 when it had a 440 yard cinder track.

The facilities developed over the years and, in 1992, when the centre was significantly refurbished it renamed Sutton Arena.

Now, in addition to the state-of-the-art facilities for elite athletes and seating for 300 spectators, it also has a broad range of events, training and equipment to appeal to local users of all ages and abilities.

Sutton Council intends to officially celebrate the change of name with a special event in the new year where young people will be invited to come along to the Arena and try their hand at various sports.
